Westport

Westport is a bucolic coastal town with an area of 22.4 square miles and a population of approximately 27, 000 residents on Long Island Sound and adjacent to Norwalk, Weston and Fairfield, Connecticut. With a distance of 47 Miles from New York City, Interstate 95, Saugatuck and Greens Farms Metro North Train Stations are a direct link.
Colonists settled along the Saugatuck River in 1648, however Westport was not established until 1835 having taken land from Norwalk, Weston and Fairfield. In 1777, during the Revolutionary War, British soldiers landed at Compo Beach, burning and pillaging property along Compo Road on their way to the Battle of Danbury. Upon their return to the Village of Saugatuck, local colonists banded together as “Minutemen” and fought a courageous battle at Compo Hill. The Minuteman statue at Comp Road commemorates their bravery in this battle. Westport prospered throughout the 1800’s as a major shipping center and the farming of extensive onion crops which swept the vast fields of Greens Farms. Close to New York City, Westport became a favored haven throughout the 1900’s for writers, artists and actors of stage and screen anxious to retreat to the peace and solace of the woods and serenity of the beautiful shoreline setting. Their legacy to the town has resulted in two marvelous venues of the arts, the Westport Playhouse and the Levitt Pavilion outdoor theatre located on the banks of the Saugatuck River.
Today, Westport is a very diverse cosmopolitan community with a cultural vibrancy extending to fine dining options, world class shopping, business headquarters and commercial centers while retaining the ambience of a New England town.
The elegant mansions along Beachside Avenue known as “The Gold Coast”, stately Colonial, Federal, Victorian and Tudor houses throughout Old Hill and Greens Farms and wonderful old beach houses and Contemporary residences at Compo Beach and Saugatuck Shores compliment an appreciation of varied architecture.
Westport has an extreme emphasis on education and the public school system comprised of 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 1 high school, is excellent.
210 acres of public space includes The Compo Beach – Longshore Complex with a long stretch of sandy beach, Longshore Sailing School, Longshore Clubhouse and Splash Restaurant, an 18 hole Golf Course at Longshore Park, Swimming Pool, state-of-the-art Playground, Marina and Yacht Basin, a soft ball field, 26 Tennis Courts, mini-van Shuttle serving Long Shore and the Town of Westport, beaches at Old Mill, Burying Hill and offshore Cockenoe Island. Indoor swimming facilities are available at Staples High School and the downtown YMCA. The expansive Sherwood Island Complex is a 300 acre state park. And throughout town there are numerous places of worship catering to varied religious faiths.
