Weston
Weston is a beautiful New England town with a total area of 19.8 square miles and a population of approximately 10,000 residents. Weston is bordered by the towns of Westport, Wilton, Redding, Easton and Fairfield, Connecticut.
With a distance of 45 miles to New York City, Weston is an easy commute via Metro North Train Line at Westport station or the Merritt Parkway.
Established 1845. North Fairfield was purchased from the Aspetuck Indians in 1670. In 1787, the parish of North Fairfield was created. The town of Weston was not officially established until 1845 when the parish of North Fairfield was divided into two sections, thus creating the towns of Weston and Easton.
Weston’s early settlers were farmers primarily growing apples, onions and potatoes. Grist, cider, lumber and fulling mills were built and by 1850, the town had nine manufacturers, evidence of the mill structures exist to this day. With its proximity to New York City, people of the arts began discovering Weston in the 1930’s. Stage, screen and television actors; artists, writers and musicians, many of great fame, were lured to the country and the beauty and serenity that Weston continues to offer.
With an extremely conscientious awareness of ecology and preservation, Weston has allocated approximately one quarter of the land area to Open Space. Parks and preserves include: Bisceglie Park with baseball fields, a swimming hole, jogging trail and fitness stations along the Saugatuck River; Devil’s Den Preserve, (where every naughty local teenager has taken an “unauthorized” plunge) and a trail system connecting with the 70 mile Saugatuck Valley Trail System; Katherine Ordway Preserve with 62 acres of woods, trails and an arboretum; Keene Park with 6 acres along each branch of the Saugatuck River; Morehouse Farm Park with ball fields; Open Space around the Saugatuck River with fishing and trails; and 16 preserves of the Aspetuck Land Trust totaling 645 acres.
Fine period houses on lots of not less than two acres mix well with architect designed custom residences throughout town. Weston Center is a quaint collection of a handful of stores and is the only “commercial” district in town. It might be added that residents are invited to post community bulletins on the side of an old Onion Barn, a throw back to days gone by.
With a strong emphasis on education, Weston’s public school system includes: Hurlbutt Elementary School, Pre K – Grade 2; Weston Intermediate School, Grades 3 – 5; Weston Middle School, Grades 6 – 8; and Weston High School, Grades 9 – 12.
We look forward to welcoming you to Weston!
