Black Rock / Black Rock Historic District

Black Rock is a beautiful residential and semi-urban, coastal section of Bridgeport enjoying a very picturesque New England Harbor and a charming historic district exemplifying nearly every important American architectural style dating from pre-Revolutionary War to present. Immediate access to Interstate 95 and Metro North Train service provides a pleasant and brief 55 mile commute to New York City.
Located in the southwest section of Bridgeport and governed by the City of Bridgeport, Black Rock annexed from Fairfield to join Bridgeport in 1870. Black Rock derived its name from the many large black boulders visible along the shore particularly at the ebbing tide.
Situated on the Harbor, sheltered on the east by Fayerweather Island and Penfield Reef to the south, Black Rock extends north to Fairfield Avenue where the original Trolley line was built in 1892 and west to Ash Creek where a causeway had connected to Fairfield. Black Rock historic district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and contains the remains of the Village of Black Rock which had been the third most important Seaport in Connecticut after the Revolutionary War and a dominant shipbuilding center before the Civil War.
Throughout the 19th century, wealthy merchants, sea captains and shipbuilders built grand houses, many in the neighborhood of Saint Mary’s-by-the-Sea, named for a chapel which once stood at water’s edge. In 1807, the federal government purchased nine and one half acres on Fayerweather Island (from David Fayerweather for $200) and erected a commanding, octagonal Lighthouse which stands guard at the entrance of Black Rock Harbor to this day. The mid-19th century brought construction of the grand George Hotel, near Grover’s Hill, which quickly became the most elegant summer resort between New York City and Newport, Rhode Island bringing Black Rock into the New England spotlight.
Today, Black Rock’s Fairfield Avenue offers an exciting and diverse array of art galleries and shopping and dining venues including trendy new restaurants and outdoor cafes. And Captain’s Cove Seaport, a premier tourist attraction on Black Rock Harbor, features a wonderful waterfront restaurant and bar, boardwalk shops and full marina facilities. The ever increasing desirability of Black Rock, offering something for everyone, is continually attracting new residents who have discovered the appeal of someplace very special.
We look forward to welcoming you to Black Rock!
