Monroe is a lovely New England town with a total area of 26.3 square miles and a population of approximately 20,000 residents. Monroe is bordered by the towns of Easton, Newtown, Oxford, Shelton and Trumbull, Connecticut. Monroe’s unique geographic position provides convenient access to New York City, Stamford and Hartford, Connecticut.

In 1662, the Colony of Connecticut secured deeds of transfer from the Golden Hill Paugussett Indian Nation for a very large territory that now comprises the towns of Trumbull, Shelton and Monroe. On May 17th, 1671 Stratford purchased the remainder of the northern portions of Monroe, Trumbull and Shelton from the Paugussett Indians in what is known as “The Whites Hill Purchase” officially annexing this territory to the Township of Stratford. As “Ecclesiastical Societies” were formed (forerunners of a town, centered on a church), the North Stratford Society was established in 1744. In 1789, The North Stratford Society and the Ripton Society united to form the New Stratford Society and the town of Huntington was created. New Stratford separated from Huntington in 1823 and at that time the town of Monroe was incorporated. Monroe is named for the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe, who served from 1817 – 1825. Monroe Center, originally known as the “Center of New Stratford” or familiarly referred to as “Brushy Ring” began to thrive. Shops and businesses were established and influential families built fine homes, many of which are beautifully preserved today. In 1977, the Monroe Center Historic District was enrolled on the National Register of Historic Places, certainly a tribute to all residents of Monroe.

Today, Monroe is a delightful mix of historic properties, many 20th century houses of varied architectural styles as well as a sprinkling of condominium complexes. The country landscape of rolling fields, horse farms and pastures is a glimpse into the past which lured the early farming settlers and continues to draw those seeking a less hurried pace.

Great Hollow Lake, Webb Mountain Park and wonderful Wolfe Park with a public pool, 4 baseball fields, a football field, a basketball court, a playground, a hiking trail, barbecue set up and a nearby Pavilion are three of the town’s outstanding amenities. The beautiful new state of the art Senior Center is also a tremendous asset to the town.

We look forward to welcoming you to Monroe!
